Money For Junk Cars: Common Money-Related FAQ

Posted on

That old junk car of yours is just taking up your yard or garage space, and it is time for it to go. You may not have to haul the vehicle to a local scrapyard just to get it out of the way. There are buyers out there that specialize in offering money for junk cars that people no longer need. If this is something that sounds good to you, you will likely have a few questions in mind.

Will you get paid more for a vintage or classic car?

If you have a vintage or classic car that is not running and basically taking up space, you may actually get more for this vehicle than a typical junk car. Vintage and classic cars can be in higher demand among junk car buyers because the parts of these vehicles are harder to find. If you have a classic car, make sure you get quotes from several junk car buyers because the value of each specific model can vary according to the buyer.

Are cars that still run worth more money?

Some vehicles can be deemed as "junk" even if they are still running. For example, if you have a car that has been involved in a wreck but the engine still runs fine, this would probably still be considered a junk car. Some buyers will give you more for a vehicle if it still runs, especially those buyers that harvest engines from vehicles to resell them. Make sure you let the buyer know if a vehicle still runs because this can mean a higher offer for the vehicle even if it is technically not in driveable condition.

Can you get more money if you take the junk vehicle to the buyer?

If you have a local buyer who accepts junk cars, you may very well be able to get a bit more money if you can take the car to them because they will not have to use their equipment to pick it up. However, keep in mind that moving a junk car often involves hiring a wrecker or towing service to help. So it may not be worth it to pay for this service if what you fetch for the vehicle is not all that much more than what it would be if the car was picked up by the buyer. If you know someone who can tow the vehicle for you for free, this could get you a few more dollars.
